Andrew Ross Murray was born in Fremantle in 1899. He was a labourer. When he was 16, he travelled to NSW to enlist. His enlistment papers claimed he was exempt from Universal Cadet Training at school and that he was 21 years 4 months old. He was described as being 5 feet 4½ inches tall with a chest measurement of 33 – 35 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He gave his denomination as Church of England. Apparently, they believed him in Newcastle, and he joined on the 28.8.15, gave him the rank of Private and Service Number 3600. He listed his father, James Murray of Bellevue Terrace, Fremantle as his next of kin. Andrew’s mother was Hannah Mary Barnes, and his siblings were Mrs JE Barnes, Mrs L Straha, Jack, Florrie, Muriel and Alick Murray. On the 7.11.1915 he went Absent Without Leave. Andrew embarked at Sydney on A70 Ballarat on the 5.8.16.
On the 9.10.16 he transferred to the 30th Battalion and on the 12.11.16 he proceeded to France. He was punished for being Out of Bounds at Étaples on the 26.11.16 and again on the 14.12.16 for being absent from parade. He was sent to the 3rd Canadian hospital sick VDG on the 25.6.17, spending 40 days in total being treated. Andrew was wounded in action on the 23.10.17. He inhaled gas from a shell. The next day he was sent to a hospital train and spent from 29.10.17 – 13.12.17 in Queen Mary’s Hospital, suffering from the effects of the gassing. He experienced laryngitis, sore chest, headaches, insomnia, tremors in hands and head, and a chronic cough that aggravated his childhood asthma.
On the 24.5.18 he was declared permanently unfit with neurasthenia and on the 31.7.1918 returned to Australia per D17 Wyandra – for discharge. Back in Fremantle, on the 22.1.19, he was treated for neurasthenia, defective vision and otitis media (middle ear infection). The next day, the Perth Military District declared him unfit for general service for 6 months. He was discharged from Fremantle 8th AG Hospital on the 27.1.1919 and from the army on the 21.2.19. Andrew died in Fremantle Public Hospital on the 2.3.1923, aged 23 years 11 months. He was buried in Fremantle Cemetery Presbyterian Mon section EE 0212. There is no headstone.
