Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

'No 2641 Private GG Carter, 16th Battalion, died from a fractured spine and heart failure at 12.30pm, on 29th ultimo at No 8 Australian General Hospital. His Next-of-Kin and relations were present at his death' (National Archives Australia).

Born in Lancashire, England in 1893, Geoffrey was the sixth of twelve children of Richard Beale Carter (b1863 in Devonshire, England) and Lucy Agnes Kilgraston Grant (b1866 in New Zealand). Richard (a Draper) and Lucy married in 1866 in New Zealand. In 1891 they returned to Blackburn, Lancashire with their children, and Richard worked as a Draper. By 1900 the family had emigrated to Fremantle WA where they settled and Richard was a Draper and Merchant. Regular trips were made back to England.

Geoffrey worked with his brothers and his father as a Draper's Assistant/Draper in Fremantle and in June 1915 enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2641). He was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion in August 1916 when he was WiA - a GSW to his back and left side, leaving him with 'complete paralysis, loss of sensation and reflexes' (National Archives Australia). Geoffrey was evacuated to King George Hospital in London, where on 23 September 1916 it was reported he 'Is not doing as well as could be expected' (National Archives Australia). In October 1916 Geoffrey embarked from Southampton on HS Karoola for Fremantle where he was admitted to No 8 Australian General Hospital. Geoffrey 'died from a fractured spine and heart attack' on 29 March 1917.

His possessions, returned to his mother, were a pair of mittens, a handkerchief, a book of poems, a book and some letters and cards.
