Charles was the son of Johann Christian and Pauline Klaffer [nee Elix]. He
married Emilie Hulda Schaefer at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on 16 April 1890.
Charles’ record highlights that recruits for the 1st A.I.F. were not exclusively
young men in their teens or early twenties. Leaving from Melbourne with his
unit on board HMAT Themistocles on 22 December 1914, Charles was sent to
Gallipoli in early 1915. On 1 August at Gallipoli he was wounded in both legs
and hospitalised at Alexandria, Egypt on 6 August. The seriousness of Charles’
condition necessitated being invalided to Australia on the Kanowna on 20
October, where he was discharged on 3 February 1916.
