ALFRED WILLIAM STURTRIDGE, son of Mr. E. and Mrs. E. L. Sturtridge, of Prairie Downs, Blackall, Queensland, was born at Emmaville, New South Wales, on 26th November, 1887. He was educated at the State School, Emmaville, N.S.W., and joined the Bank's staff on 1st October, 1905, at Emmaville. On 10th November, 1906, he was transferred to Dungog; on 13th November, 1907, to Gunnedah; on 3rd December, 1908, to Maitland; on 1st July, 1909, he was appointed ledger-keeper at Maitland; on 20th July, 1910, he was sent to Boggabri, as assistant; on 22nd December, 1911, to Tamworth, as ledger-keeper; on 14th July, 1913, to Emerald, as assistant; on 3rd March, 1914, to Longreach, as teller; and on 7th June, 1915, to Hughenden, in the same capacity.

Alfred William Sturtridge enlisted on 14th August, 1915, as a private in the A.I.F., and embarked at Brisbane on 16th August, 1916. He arrived in France in December, 1916, where he was in continuous service and received the following promotions: corporal, February, 1917; second-lieutenant, December, 1917; and lieutenant a year later. He returned to Australia on 3rd July, 1919.
