Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Duncan Smith was the son of John and Catherine Smith, of Hotspur, Condah, Victoria. His father had passed in 1892, when he was only a boy. Duncan enlisted at near forty years of age in the 4th Light Horse Regiment.

His much younger brother, 3456A Cpl. James McPherson Smith 6th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in France 8 February 1917, aged 24.

Duncan survived over two years of service in the Middle East with the 4th Light Horse and the Camel Corps. He was reported to have been one of the men who charged Beersheba with the 4th Light Horse Regiment. He fell sick on 11 October 1918 in Damascus and died of pneumonia over a week later in Syria.
