Ken was the eldest of three children of Kenneth (Snr) Edward Swindells (born 1894 in Bothwell, Tasmania) and Kathleen Ann Proberts (born 1898 in Cairns, QLD). Kenneth Snr was a Railway Labourer in Tasmaina before moving to Cairns, QLD in 1915 where he was a Cane Cutter when he married Kathleen in 1917. Kenneth and Kathleen raised their family in Cairns, QLD where Kenneth was a Labourer at the Gas Works. They moved to Brisbane, QLD in 1937, where Kenneth worked as a Fitter and Labourer until fis death in 1953.

Ken was a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:Q28269) attached to 3 Garrison Battalion when he was Discharged in August 1944. Ken went AWOL and was Court Martialled and sentenced to years imprisonment commencing 17 August 1944. Younger brother Rod (Service No:Q202290) also served in WWII.

Ken settled in Brisbane, QLD, living with his mother and working as a Labourer. In 1948 he married Bernice Ann Watson (nee Martin, born 1913 in Brisbane, QLD). They lived in Brisbane, where Ken was a Waterside Worker, Bernice died in 1959 and Ken in 1969.
