Military Medal
'In an operation against the enemy position at MERRIS on night 9th/10th July, 1918. During the advance Corporal Newton's Platoon was held up by very heavy machine gun fire, the Officer and Platoon Sergeant became casualties and he took charge, led the platoon to a favourable position and dug in under heavy machine gun fire. His coolness and example held the Platoon together under very trying circumstances.'
