PRIVATE STEWART SMITH
In the course of a letter to his mother, Mrs. E. G. Smith, of West Perth, Private Stewart Smith, formerly of Kalgoorlie, writes :—
"Little do we know what the morrow will bring forth. This time yesterday I was in the firing line with shot and shell screaming around, and to-day I am in harbour
at Lemnos Island on board a hospital ship. I am not ill, but am having a lazy holiday. You see, I had been over 19 weeks under fire, so they decided to give me a spell.
We will probably leave for Malta or Alexandria in a few hours. This is a beautiful ship, and we are treated like lords . . . There are all sorts on this boat. There are Gurkhas (bonzer little chaps), Sikhs, Punjabis, Australians, New Zealanders, and a sprinkling of Jack Tars. There are some wounded, some sick and a good many like myself, in need of a rest. I am going to have a few weeks' spell, and then back to work again. But I don't think I shall be needed up there again. I have an idea that this month is going to settle matters, at least as far as the Peninsula is concerned. Let us hope so, at any rate, But if I am wanted be sure I will be there.
