Harry enlisted in November 1915, four months after his brother Albert and shipped out to France on the HMAT Warilda on the 8th February 1916. The 24th AIF Battalion took part in its first major offensive in France at the Battle of Pozières starting on 23 July 1916. 5 days later, Harry was wounded for the first time with a gun shot wound to the arm which would see him sidelined for 5 months, rejoining his unit on Christmas day 1916. Just over six weeks later, Harry was wounded for the second time putting him out for five weeks. The battle of Bapaume started on the 17 March 1917. 4 weeks later, Harry was severely wounded with a gun shot wound to the leg. He would have no idea that his brother Albert fightinhg in Egypt, also suffered a gun shot wound to the leg 4 days later. Harry rejoined his unit on the 3 July 1918 and took part in the battle of Hamel. On the 13 July 1918, Harry was wounded for the fourth time, this time suffering from "Yellow Cross" (Mustard Gas). Harry rejoined his unit on the 4 October 1918 and took part in the battle of Beaurevoir (part of the hundred days offensive). The war came to an end on 11 November 1918. Harry returned to Australia on the SS Castalia and was discharged on the 20 July 1919.
After the war, Harry and Albert applied to the Victorian Soldier Settlement Scheme for allotments of land for fruit growing in the Mildura / Red Cliffs settlement area. In June 1920 they were granted lots 39F and 39G at Woorinen North.
