Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

'Mr and Mrs WH Tweed of Lagoon Pocket have been advised by the Minister for the Army that their eldest son, Lance Corporal Leslie Roy Hilton Tweed AIF, has been wounded fighting against the Japanese" (The Telegraph; 11 July 1945; p5).

Roy, born in 1919 in Mt Perry QLD, was the third of four children of William Henry Tweed (b1888 in Eidsvold, QQLD) and Rose Florence Birchley (b1890 in Eidsvold, QLD). William (a Labourer) and Rose married in 1910 in Eidsvold QLD and by 1912 had settled in Mt Perry where William worked as a Labourer and Selector before becoming a Farmer in Kilkivan, QLD.

Roy, a Labourer at Lagoon Pocket, initially enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:Q105067) before transferrining in February 1945 to the AIF (Private; Service No:QX63288). 'Private (now L/Corporal) Roy Hilton Tweed of Gympie - when his company was consolidating on its objective after a successful battalion attack, intense and accurate enemy shelling caused casualties to our troops. With complete unconcern for enemy fire, Tweed moved slowly around tending to the wounded. Despite the fact that he was blown off his feet three times by blast from shells, he carried on with great determination. He himself was wounded, but only when all others were attended to did he allow himself to be evacuated' (Maryborough Chronicle, 22 September 1945; p4). Roy was awarded the Military Medal - Commonwealth of Australia Gazette; 27 September 1945; p2073 and London Gazette; 4 October 1945; p4886. He was attached to 58/59 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in April 1946.

Following his Discharge, Roy worked as an Orderly at Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital in Brisbane QLD before relocating to the Repatriation General Hospital in Concord NSW where he worked as an Orderly until the early 1960s. After a short break in Sydney NSW, Roy settled in Newcastle where he was an Ironworker and Storeman. Roy died in 1986.
