He had a varied career - an aerated water manufacturer and a Licensed Victualler in Esk, QLD, a Labourer and Bus Driver in Toowoomba in the 1920s, and a Cab Driver in Brisbane, QLD.
Dan had been working in Brisbane as a Labourer and Cab Driver since the mid - 1930s and in February 1939 he married Rita Isabel Quine (born 1911 in Brisbane, QLD).
In November 1939 Dan enlisted in the Australian Army, serving for two months as a Private (Service No:QX4503) attached to 6 Australian Division. Brother Lawrence James Varendorff (Lance Corporal, Service No:QX22458) served from 1941 to 1945.
