Dan was the third of four children of Augustus Varendorff (born 1879 in Cahrters Towers, QLD) and first wife Catherine Julia Sweeney (born 1883 in Warwick, QLD). Augustus was a Draper in Brisbane, QLD when he married Catherine in 1908. He had a varied career - an aerated water manufacturer and a Licensed Victualler in Esk, QLD, a Labourer and Bus Driver in Toowoomba in the 1920s, and a Cab Driver in Brisbane, QLD.

Dan had been working in Brisbane as a Labourer and Cab Driver since the mid - 1930s and in February 1939 he married Rita Isabel Quine (born 1911 in Brisbane, QLD).

In November 1939 Dan enlisted in the Australian Army, serving for two months as a Private (Service No:QX4503) attached to 6 Australian Division. Brother Lawrence James Varendorff (Lance Corporal, Service No:QX22458) served from 1941 to 1945.

Dan returned to Taxi Driving in Brisbane before he and Rita moved to Mount Morgan in QLD where Dan was Licensee of the Calliungal Hotel and Rita the Housekeeper. By the 1950s Dan and Rita had moved to Toombul in Brisbane, QLD where Dan worked as an Engine Driver. He died in 1985 and Rita died in 1989.
