Commenced return to Australia on 30 April 1919 aboard HT Karagola disembarking on the 12 June 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Tasmania

On 9 June 1919 his father wrote to Base Records with and enlcosed letter telling Ernest that his wife Nellie had passed away a fortnight earlier
