Bert Gardner was the son of Edward Benjamin and Sarah Ann Gardner, of Snake Valley, Victoria. He was one of 8 children, three of whom died serving with the AIF during WW1.
His older brother 3067 Lce. Cpl. Albert Edward Gardner 58th Battalion was killed at Bullecourt 12 May 1917 and another brother 5091 Pte. Alfred Morris Gardner 8th Battalion was killed in action 9 August 1918, aged 22.
