Served 14 months in South Africa, 2nd NSW Contingent, being the 1st New South Wales Mounted Rifles, D Squadron. He embarked for South Africa with 1st NSWMR on 17 January 1900 and returned to Australia, disembarking on the 29th April 1901.
Richard enlisted again in Sydney on the 22nd April 1902. On his attestation papers his occupation recorded at enlistment in was Shearer; aged 32 years, born at Warren NSW and was assigned to the 5th Australian Commonwealth Horse (NSW). Richard’s rank was listed as Sergeant. It appears he returned to Australia in May 1902.
