Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

THE death oocurred recently of Mr. John (Henry) Banff of Clinton Vineyards, Coominya. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Banff, two of the district's earliest pioneers, who came out from Germany 100 years ago and went to Clinton 70 years ago to pioneer the grape industry there. He was born at Fernvale 80 years ago, and served in the South African War. On his return he went to Taroom, and spent 12 years in the grazing industry, but returned to Clinton when his brother, Lieut. William Banff, died. He was closely associated with the wine industry until 12 years ago.

Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Henry Banff enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. H. Banff, single, Gatton. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 6, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. J. Banff (his mother), Bellevue Railway Station via Ipswich. The paybooks note he was returned early (not invalided) to Brisbane where he was discharged on 19 Dec 1900.

John (Henry) Banff was born on 12 Dec 1873 at Fernvale, a son to Jacob Bannf and Julia Hannah Banff (nee Stark). His younger brother Frederick William Banff served as a  Lieutenant in the 5th Light Horse in WW1.

His parents and siblings had developed the Clifton Vineyard and Winery at Coominya, with the vineyards in full operation by 1905 and the winery in 1914. When John returned from the war he resided at Lowood, where in Aug 1901 at a town function at St James's Cgurch he was presented with a South African Medal. He initially pursued grazing interests before rejoining the family vineyard and winery operation.
