Note- his full name was Joseph Jones Banks and his name is inscribed as J. J. Banks on the Allora Boer Memorial tablet containing names of Allora men who fought in the South African Boer War.
When he enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. Banks, single, Goomburra, via Allora. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 7, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mr. C. H. Banks (his older brother), Ebley Park, Allora. He was invalided from service returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 25 Aug 1900.
Joseph Jones Banks was born on 14 Oct 1877 at Allora, a son to John Jones Banks and Elizabeth Sutton Banks (nee Bourne). He married Edith Mary Sharpe on 24 Apr 1913 at Sarina, Qld, and they had 1 child. In his early years he worked in the pastoral industry in south western Qld before moving to Brisbane where he conducted business as a produce merchant.
