Cyril was the youngest son of Mr. Sydney Thomas Smith of 11o Barking Road, Canning Town, London E., England. He was empolyed in the publishing department of the Sydney Morning Herald when he enlisted for active service in September 1916.
He went to France with the 60th Battalion as a Lewis machine gunner, and was in the action at Bapaume, Bullecourt, Polygon Wood and Ypres.
Upon his discharge he left the service of the Sydney Morning Herlad to take up another occupation.
