Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Herbert Asher Benjamin was born on 9 Apr 1868 at Yass, New South Wales, a son to Lewis Benjamin and Deborah Benjamin (nee Hart). He married Priscilla Harriett Smith in 1888 at Newtown, Sydney and they had 2 children. Its unclear when they relocated to Queensland, however, their first child was born in Sept 1895 in Queensland.

At the time of his enlistment in 1901 for the South African (Boer) War it appears he was employed by the Electric Telegraph Department of Queensland. Post the war he worked with the Postmaster-General's Department. Newspaper reports of his death indicate he was also a veteran of WW1 and WW2, however, records of those services don't appear in respective nominal rolls or in records held by the National Archives.
