Private Ernest William McMahon (Service No:3351) enlisted in the AIF in Sydney NSW on 13 July 1917 and was attached to 36th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Glasgow on 2 August 1917 on board HMAT A28 Miltiades. Private McMahon embarked from England for Sydney on board HT Medic on 24 August 1918 and was attached to 36th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 18 October 1918. In WWII Private McMahon served with the ACMF (Service No:V147538) with 3rd Garrison Brigade (12 and 17 Garrison Battalions) and was attached to 27 Employment Coy at Discharge on 15 November 1943. Siblings Frank and James served in WWI and Robert in WWII.
Ernest was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1892, fourth of twelve children of Michael Thomas McMahon (b1864 in Burrumbeet, Victoria) and Margaret (Maggie) Piper (b1871 in Melbourne, Victoria). Michael (a Labourer) and Maggie (a Domestic Servant) married in 1887 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Michael worked as a Quarryman and Labourer.
Ernest completed an apprenticeship in Melbourne with Marshall Shoe Coy and was a Boot Operator in Melbourne in 1912 when he married Myra Constance Dickinson (b1889 in Lilydale, Victoria). Ernest worked in Melbourne as a Boot Finisher, and was separated from Myra in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF in Sydney NSW. In 1919 in Adelaide, South Australia Ernest married second wife, Gertrude Susan Mansell (b1896 at Mt Gambier, South Australia). Ernest and Gertrude lived in Mt Gambier, where Ernest was a Linesman before moving to the Wimmera, Victoria (Goroke and Horsham) in the late 1920s, where Ernest worked as a Labourer. In the early 1940s Ernest and Gertrude moved their family to Melbourne, where Ernest worked as a Cleaner. Ernest died in 1962 and Gertrude in 1978.
