BOER WAR VETERAN
Death of Capt. H. W. Brown
After a brief illness, Capt. Herbert Woolmer Brown, D.C.M., of Jeffcott street, North Adelaide, died this morning in a private hospital. At one time he was extra aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Galway (formerly Governor of South Australia). Capt. Brown had
been associated with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade at head station since 1903, and at the time of his death was brigade secretary. Flags were flown half-mast today at fire stations in the metropolitan area as a token of respect. Capt. Brown was educated at Prince Alfred College and served in the South African war with the second South Australian contingent. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medarl for swimming the Modder River under fire to bring back punts for the transport of troops.
During the great war Capt. Brown was attached to military headquarters at Adelaide, and did valuable work as a censor. He has left a widow and one son, Mr. Denis Brown. His age was 56 years. His remains will be burid in North Road Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
