James Joseph Byrne was born on 19 Sep 1878 in Queensland, a son to Daniel Byrne and Alice Byrne (nee Birmingham). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as D. Byrne, New Farm, Qld. He married Ellen Louisa Kelly on 13 Jun 1911 in Queensland.
