Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Stewart Carruthers enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. Carruthers, Brisbane. In his Boer War Dossier held by the National Archives is a letter to Army Records from his son N. J. (Neville James) Carruthers (b. 1930) in 1973 where he sought and recieved confirmation that his father served in the South African (Boer) War.

John Stewart Carruthers was born in 1883 at Dryfesdale, Scotland, a son to James Carruthers and Mary Ann Carruthers (nee Stewart). At the age of 5 he and 2 siblings emigrated with his parents to Queensland aboard the ship Jumna arriving Brisbane 13 Oct 1888. He was twice married. He married Ada Henrietta Muller on 2 Nov 1903 in Queensland and they had 6 children before they divorced in 1934. He then married Mary Lilian Griffin on 6 Jan 1938 in Queensland.
