Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When William Clelland enlsited in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as R. Clelland, Roma. The original Nominal Roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, p. 5, held by National Archives Australia, notes that his N.O.K. was his brother R. Clellend, Roma.

When he returned from the war and was discharged it is noted in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 96, that he was granted a pass his advised address c/- Allan Clelland, Cunnamulla.

William Clelland was born about 1871 in County Down, Northern Ireland, a son to Allen Clelland and Jane Clelland (nee Flemming). His mother had passed in 1889, prior to him enlisting. When his father passed in 1926 newspaper obituaries noted that he was from County Down, Ireland, and had emigrated with his young family to Queensland and after time in Cunnamulla, settled in Roma in 1882. His father was a builder and established a long running building contractors business in the Roma district in which William and his brothers worked.

William Clelland married Ada Kruger on 23 Jan 1912 in Queensland and they had 5 children.
