Biography

Son of Arthur Wells BISHOP and Eva Dunstan nee CROSS

Biography contributed by Modbury High School

Walter Bishop was born on 10 September 1892 in the coastal town of Port Pirie, South Australia. He was raised by his parents, Eva Bishop and Arthur Wells Bishop. He attended Basket Range Public School and later worked as a market gardener.

On 4 May 1915, at the age of twenty-two, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, the first man from Basket Range to enlist. His two brothers Alfred Norman and Lloyd Allan plus a brother-in-law, also fought in the war.

He served in the AIF for two years. On 2 April 1916, he transferred to the 15th Field Artillery Brigade as a gunner, and on 27 January 1917, he transferred again to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade.

He fought on the Western Front as a gunner; he was wounded on 4 June 1917 during the Battle of Messines, in Belgium. He returned to war but was wounded a second time on 20 September 1917 at Menin, also in Belgium. He was transported to Boulogne, France, on 23 September 1917. Just three days later, he passed away at the age of twenty-five. His mother, deeply affected by his death, sent letters to the 9th Light Horse Regiment, hoping he would receive them. Unfortunately, he was never able to respond.

He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France, in Plot VIII, Row I, Grave No. 37. Walter Bishop is commemorated on multiple memorials, including the Adelaide National War Memorial, the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Basket Range WW1 Memorial, and the Uraidla & Districts Roll of Honour.
