Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Aubrey De Pree Crichton served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Lieutenant, 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Lieutenant, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (2nd Draft).

When he joined the 4th QIB in 1900 and he was entered in the original nominal roll for the 4th Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. was recorded as his father Capt. Crichton, Albion House, New Sandgate Road, Clayfield. His father, Quartermaster-Captain Archibald Edward Crichton, also served in the 4th QIB. He served the full tour of the 4th QIB and was discharged in Brisbane on 10 Aug 1901.

Almost immediately he was selected as one of the officers (Lieutenant) of the 2nd Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Sep 1901. Every member of the draft, except one, had served previously in the 3rd or 4th contingents in South Africa, and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.

Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB but he is recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 114. When the 5th QIB returned to Australia it appears he remained in South Africa with Doyle's Australian Scouts with whom he was serving at the time. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 114, notes he returned to Australia aboard the Norfolk and was discharged in Brisbane on 14 Aug 1902.

Aubrey De Pree Crichton was born on 29 Jan 1879 in Queensland, a son to Archibald Edward Crichton and  Mary Elizabeth Crichton (nee Blastock). He married Amy Mary Maddock on 15 Oct 1903 in Queensland and they had 6 children.
