When John Joseph Evans enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father George Evans, Lengthsman, Warwick-Killarney Branch. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 76, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. G. Evans, Warwick.

John Joseph Evans was born on 13 Dec 1882 at Dulacca South, Queensland, a son to George Evans and Mary Ellen Evans (nee Noonan). He married Mary Ellen Butler on 11 May 1908 and they had 9 children.
