DEATH OF BOER
WAR VETERAN
Brigadier-General J. F. Flewell Smith, who died recently, came to Australia with his parents when he was only three years of age. Settling at Fernvale, the family engaged in farming there until they moved to Broken Ridge in 1914. Joining the Volunteer Defence movement in the early days, Brigadier-General Flewell-Smilh was ap pointed to the command of a company of the Moreton Regiment. Later he became commanding officer of the regiment. He was Commander of the Fifth Australian Contingent in the Boer War. For two years after the Boer War he was administrator al Colesburg. In the Great War he was in charge of the training battalion at Thompson's Paddock until he was appointed to the command of an overseas transport. He was one of a party of four who rescued a marooned family during the 1893 flood. For this, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society medal. He was closely connected with co-operative movements, being one of the first directors of the Murarne Bacon Company, ot which he as chairman for many years, a director of the Queensland Farmers' Co-operative Association, and the Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Society. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs A. L. M. Wilson. Brisbane, and two sons. Mr B. Flewell-Smith. Brisbane, and Capt. G. Flewell-Smith AIF
