When Alfred Francis enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. B. Francis, Boggo Rd., South Brisbane. He was recorded under his full name of Alfred James Francis in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 1 p. 43, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. B. Francis, Boggo Rd., South Brisbane.

Alfred James Francis was born on 29 Apr 1877 in Queensland, a son to James Francis and Bridget Francis (nee McLoughlin). He married Lucinda Isabella Drysdale on 13 Dec 1905 at St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane and they had 3 children while living in Tingalpa.
