Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Joseph Thomas Gatfield enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. Gatfield, Rosalie Plains, Qld. In the original nominal roll of the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted his father was at Rosalie Plains, Jondaryan. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 66, it is noted Joseph's address after discharge was Rosalie Plains, Jondaryan.

Joseph Thomas Gatfield was born in 1877 at Lancashire, England, a son to William Gatfield and Phoebe Morton Gatfield (nee Binns). He emigrated with his parents and siblings to Queensland where his father took up farming at Rosalie Plains, Jondaryan. He was farming with his father at "Fawley", Jondaryan, when his father passed in 1934. Joseph was later farming at Bymaroo before retiring to Brisbane where he was last living at Kangaroo Point.
