Thomas Gorman served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. He first served as a Private (rising to Lance-Corporal) S.N. 60 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. He re-enlisted for WW1 serving as a Hon. Lieutenant (Quarter-Master) in the 16th Infantry Battalion AIF WW1.

At the time he enlisted in the Boer War he was living in Qld giving his place of residence as Bundaberg. He married Henrietta Edwards in Qld on 28 Jul 1901. Prior to enlisting in WW1 they had relocated to Perth where at the time of enlistment he was sorking as a Business Manager. In his WW1 service record (p. 36) the Application for a Commission notes his previous service in the Boer War in the 3rd Q.M.I.
