When the 5th Contingent of the South Australian Imperial Bushmen completed their service in South Africa in 1902 most returned home. However, some, including Grewar, opted to be discharged in South Africa.
Later in 1902 he joined the British Army – Imperial Yeomanry as a Lieutenant. This unit was a volunteer mounted force that was serving in South Africa.
While living in South Africa joined the Freemasons Royal Albert Lodge, Kierks Dorp in November 1903
Grewar appears to have gone to the UK sometime between 1903 & 1905 as he is recorded as sailing from Liverpool to Cape Town in 1905 and returning to London from Durban1908.
Grewar is recorded in various UK census and electoral rolls as being in London from 1910.
He married Emma Durando (nee Preller) at St Martins, London in 1914, although they are shown in the 1911 census as together and having been married for 2 years. Emma was born in Trieste which was then part of the Austrian Empire but now is in Italy.
The census shows his occupation as being the Manager of a wholesale & manufacturing dairy company in London.
1914 he was appointed Lieutenant in the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry.
The January 1915 issue of the London Gazette advised that on 12th December 1914 he was promoted to temporary Captain.
By war’s end he held the rank of Captain.
Back in Adelaide, the local press in August 1916 reported that his brother Wilfred had been wounded and that Leonard was in the Colchester Military Hospital.
Leonard and Emma Grewar returned to live in Melbourne in 1921. The electoral rolls show his occupation as a journalist.
Leonard Dangar Grewar died in Richmond Victoria in 1941
