Robert Herkes was born on 2 Feb 1872 in the area of Gangat near Manning River, New South Wales, a son to Robert and Emma Herkes.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First Service was as a Private S.N. 151 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private rising to Lance Corporal and then Lance Sergeant S.N. 204 in the 8th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, WW1.
