Mr. E. M. Hockings, architect, Rockhampton, 72, who died last week, was the youngest son of Mr. A. J. Hockings, a former Mayor of Brisbane, and M.L.A. for South Brisbane. He attended the Brisbane Grammar School, and later was articled to Mr. Gailey. He submitted for competition a design for the Rockhampton Girls' Grammar School. This was accepted, and, to be close to the work, he established himself in Rockhampton. In the Boer War, in which he was wounded and decorated, he ommanded a squadron of the Third Queensland Contingent, taking a prominent part in the battle of Eland's River, and the Relief of Mafeking. He served also in the Great War with the rank of major. He has left a widow, two daughters, and two sons. His youngest son, Pilot Officer George Hockings, has just been reported killed in action in New Guinea.
