Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1:

- Private S.N. 356, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War; and

- Sapper S.N. 16127, Field Company Engineers, AIF, WW1.

When William Hodge enlsited in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. J. Hodge, George St, Brisbane.

He enlisted again in 1916 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 3 May 1916, it is noted that; he was born at Glasgow, Scotland, and was 39 years 11 months of age; he was single with the trade of builder; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs. Mary Hodge, Hill End, Brisbane; and he had previously served in South Africa in the 5th QIB.

When he passed in Brisbane in 1940, a probate notice for his estate published by the Qld Public Trustee in The Courier Mail, 6 Apr 1940, noted his name was William Findlay McKellar (commonly known as William Hodge).

William Findlay McKellar (William Hodge) was born in 1876 at Glasgow, Scotland, a son to Adam Walker McKellar and Mary Findlay, as shown on online BDM ScotlandsPeople birth registration and BDM Qld death registration. It appears his father passed in 1879, and his mother Mary McKellar then remarried in 1882 in Scotland to John Hodge with the young William in turn taking his stepfather's surname.
