Henry “Harry” Vincent Hunt was born at Modbury, South Australia, in 1880, and his military service extended across three major conflicts: the Boer War, the First World War, and the Second World War. His earliest recorded service was in the Boer War, when he enlisted at Adelaide on 21 April 1902 as Regimental No. 42, serving as a Shoeing Smith and Farrier in the South Australian Commonwealth Contingent for service in South Africa. At that time, he gave his age as 22 years and 4 months, his trade as farrier, his religion as Wesleyan, his address as Houghton, and his next of kin as his father, John Vincent Hunt of Kent Town. He was certified medically fit for service in South Africa.
Hunt later enlisted for service in the First World War with the Australian Imperial Force. He joined at Morphettville, South Australia, on 22 August 1914 as No. 33 Henry Vincent Hunt, giving his birthplace as Modbury, his occupation as farrier, and his next of kin as his mother, Christina Hunt of Mitcham. His attestation and medical papers describe him as 33 years old, single, Baptist, and physically fit for active service. During this war he served with the Australian Army Service Corps and Mounted Divisional Train, rising to Farrier Sergeant and Staff Sergeant Farrier.
His record shows overseas service from 1914, including service connected with Egypt and the Gallipoli campaign, and he remained abroad for more than four years. He was discharged after the cessation of hostilities on 23 January 1919, with total service recorded as approximately four years and 186 days, including four years and 65 days abroad.
For his First World War service, Hunt received notable recognition. In 1919 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for valuable services rendered with Forces in Egypt. The Base Records Office advised his mother that the award had appeared in the London Gazette and the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette.
Despite already having served in two earlier wars, Hunt again enlisted during the Second World War. On 30 September 1939, at Adelaide, he enlisted in the 4th Garrison Battalion. His mobilisation form recorded him as 58 years old, single, a labourer, born at Modbury, with his brother Walter Hunt listed as next of kin. His record shows service in the 4th Garrison Battalion until he was discharged at Wayville on 15 October 1941 as medically unfit for military service, though fit for civilian employment.
His total military service to Australia spanned nearly forty years from his first enlistment in 1902 to his final discharge in 1941.
Henry “Harry” Vincent Hunt MSM died in Brisbane on 6 January1959, aged 78, and was buried the following day in Anzac Portion 9, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
He was unmarried with no known children.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
