Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Joshua Clare Innes, also recorded as Joshua Innes, served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 266, 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private rising to Corporal S.N. 620, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).

When he joined the 3rd QMI in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 3 Mar 1900, he was recorded as single and from Gloucester St, Spring Hill. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 3rd QMI, Bk 3 p. 8, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Olivia Innes, Gloucester St, Spring Hill. He served the full tour with the 3rd QMI and was discharged in Brisbane in Jun 1901.

Not long after he was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa. Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB but are recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks.

He was recorded by Murray on the AWM Nominal Roll as Joshua Innes. However, the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 58 records him under his full name Joshua Clare Innes. The paybooks also note he directed part of his pay to his brother-in-law Richard Alexander Grant, Scrub Rd, Enoggera, as his mother had passed just 2 days after he arrived back in Brisbane from his first service.

Newspaper reports note when the 5th QIB returned to Australia a number of men remained in South Africa for various reasons including for further service. The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 620, Corporal Joshua C. Innes, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 58, notes he returned to Brisbane and was discharged 14 Aug 1902.

Joshua Clare Innes was born on 12 Jan 1877 at Rathdown, County Wicklow, Ireland, a son to George MacDonald Innes and Olivia Lavina Innes (nee Clare). It is unclear under what conditions he emigrated to Australia with his father reported as passing in New York in 1899, but it appears that he and the majority of his 9 siblings along with his mother emigrated to Brisbane.

He was twice married. He first married Maud Florence Victor on 12 Apr 1909 in Queensland, Maud passing in 1925. He then married Mary Maud Flux on 13 Jun 1928 in Queensland.
