When George James Iszlaub enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private G. J. Iszlaub, single, Bacon Factory, Toowoomba. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 123, it is noted he directed part of his pay to W. Iszlaub, Plainlands (this was his older brother William Maximilian Iszlaub). He was invalided from service and returned to Brisbane where he was discharged 25 Aug 1900.
George James Iszlaub was born on 12 Oct 1874 in Queensland, a son to Conrad Frederick Iszlaub and Martha Iszlaub (nee Robertson). He was twice married and lived in the Toowoomba district working, among other occupations, as an iron worker with the railways department. He first married Elizabeth Victoria Margaretta Woolard on 31 Oct 1905 in Queensland and they had two children before Elizabeth passed in 1910. He then married Mary Ann Rheinberger on 21 Dec 1912 in Queensland.
