William Knox was born in 1872 at Aberdeen, Scotland, a son to George Knox and Catherine Knox (nee Napier). He married Isabella MacDonald on 13 Jan 1912 in Queensland. When he emigrated from Scotland he worked as a supervisor on canefileds in North Queensland, and later took a selection at Miles. He then took a position as supervisor of the Brisbane City Council survey department where he remained for 31 years.
