Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- while the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll compiled by Murray records him as George James Le Marchand, his correct name was George Jones Le Marchand.

When George Jones Le Marchand enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private G. J. Le Marchand, married, Walkerston, Mackay. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 64, it is noted he sought and was granted his discharge in South Africa on 6 Nov 1900.

George Jones Le Marchand was born on 26 Mar 1874 at Bengal, India, a son to Walter John Le Marchand and Lucy Sophia Le Marchand (nee Jones). He married Ethel Mary Emily Ball on 20 May 1897 in Queensland. They were living in Mackay with one child when he enlisted in 1899.

George remained in South Africa after his discharge, relocating his wife and child to be with him. Their next three children were born in 1903, 1904 and 1906, with them living at Sunnyside, Pretoria. By 1908 they were back in Brisbane where their last 4 children were born (total of 8 children).
