Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- his older brother Herbert Mark Meadows Maddock also served in WW1 as a Captain with the 9th Infantry Battalion AIF, and his younger brother Arthur Framk Vivian Maddock also served in the Boer War as a Private S.N. 81 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
George Hamilton Sydney Maddock served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again in WW1. First service was as a Private rising to Sergeant S.N. 170, 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war. Second service was as a Private rising to Sergeant S.N. 692, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (2nd Draft), Boer war. Third service was as a Trooper S.N. 1304, Camel Corps/11th Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1.
When he joined the 4th QIB in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as Rigby D. Maddock, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 4th QIB, Bk 3 p. 54, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Herbert M. M. Maddock (his brother), Marine Dept., Brisbane. He served the full tour of the 4th QIB returning to Brisbane for discharge on 13 Aug 1901.
Very soon after he was selected in the Second Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Sep 1901. All but one of the members of the draft had served previously in either the 3rd QMI or 4th QIB contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB, but he is recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 133, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his brother H. M. Maddock, Port Office, Brisbane. Men in the draft served for an extended period after the 5th QIB had returned to Australia. The paybooks do not provide a return to, or discharge date in Australia.
He enlisted again in Brisbane in 1916 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 15 May 1916, he noted that; he was born at Warwick, Qld, and was 41 years 10 months of age; he was married with one child, and a clerk; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Francis Mary Maddock, Park Rd, Yeerongpilly, Brisbane; and he had previously served with the QIB in the Boer War, South Africa.
George Hamilton Sydney Maddock was born on 17 Jul 1874 at Warwick, a son to Rigby James Maddock and Laura Casandra Maddock (nee Barnes). He married Frances Mary Queale on 5 Sep 1911 at St. Peter's Church, West End and they had 1 child. After marrying it appears they settled on the Darling Downs at Cambooya where he was working as an auctioneer in 1912. Prior to his enlisting for WW1 in 1916 they had relocated to Yeerongpilly in Brisbane where he was working as a clerk.
