When John Gray Martin enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB for the Boer War and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother, Cambridge St, South Brisbane. A family relative provided information for a biography of him on the Australian Boer War Memorial database where it was noted he was known as "Jack".

John Gray Martin was born on 26 Nov 1879 in Queensland, a son to John Martin and Janet Martin (nee Gray). He married Annie Frances Hort on 18 Dec 1907 in Queensland and they had 7 children.

When he enlisted in 1917 for WW1 he noted on his Attestation Form dated 28 May 1917 that; he was 37 years 6 months old working as a sawyer; was married with 5 children and N.O.K. was his wife Annie Frances Martin; they were living at Eumundi; and he had previously served in South Africa. Originally serving with the 49th Infantry Battalion he was wounded in action in France on 4 Jul 1918, and after recovering he was transferred to the 25th Infantry Battalion for the remainder of his service.
