Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 15th May 1917, Private David Henry White, 54th Battalion (Reg No-4908), butcher from Dora Creek, New South Wales, was possibly Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell, 2nd Battle of Bullecourt, France, age 25.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales about October 1892 to Captain George Phillip (died 9.7.1910, Brunker Road, Hamilton West, N.S.W., age 56, buried on the Sunday afternoon of the 10th July 1910, no funeral notice), and Charlotte Sophia White (died 2.7.1941, Warren Avenue, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 79, mother of 9, late of Dora Creek, N.S.W.), Dave enlisted on the 22nd August with the 2nd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Star of England on the 8th March 1916.

Transferred to 54th Battalion 20.4.1916.

Granted furlough from the 20.10.1916 to 4.11.1916.

Mr. White’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.
Place of Association – Dora Creek, New South Wales, Australia.

Dave’s name has also been inscribed on the Book of Gold, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), and the Dora Creek WW1 Honour Roll.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the White gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Dave’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-51. 76.
