"MOTOR FATALITY. LIEUT.-COL. PAUL KILLED.

BATHURST, Friday. Lieut.-Colonel Harold Paul, a well-known property salesman of Bathurst, was killed in a motor car accident on the Sydney-road, near Rydal, at about 7.30 this morning. Lieut.-Colonel Paul, accompanied by his aunt, Mrs. J. W. Smith, of Bathurst, her two daughters, Miss Pauline Smith and Nurse Anita Smith, and his son. Norman Paul, aged 14, left Bathurst at about 6 o'clock for Sydney. There was no eyewitness of the accident. Thomas R. Richards, the Rydal-Yetholme mailman, driving down the mountain road near Rydal came upon the scene of the accident. Colonel Paul was then alive, and Richards proceeded to Rydal for assistance. On his return Colonel Paul was dead. Mrs. Smith and Nurse Smith were injured. The car was lying overturned on the road. It appears as if the car was going up an embankment, skidded, and overturned. Colonel Paul had been throw clear of the car, and his neck was broken. The injured were taken to Bathurst Hospital. Lietit.-Colonel Paul was 44 years of age, and a son of Mr. W. H. Paul, a former M.L.A. Deceased recently stood for selection in the National Interest for the Macquarie Beat for the Federal elections. He was a leading member of the local branch of the National Association. He served in the Boer war, and went to the Great War with the 20th Battalion as captain, and later he was promoted to major, and as lieutenant-colonel was transferred to the 49th Battalion. He was also commanding officer of the 54th Battalion. Colonel Paul was a prominent adherent and office-bearer of the Methodist Church."from the Sydney Morning Herald 14 Oct 1922 (nla.gov.au)
