Douglas James Emery MM was born in Hawthorne, Victoria on the 6.6.1896. He signed his enlistment papers on the 22.8.1914 and joined on the 4.9.1914 at Blackboy Hill. Douglas was 18 years 3 months old, a butcher and Presbyterian who had previously served with the WA Naval Reserve, Senior Cadets & Citizen Forces. He was described as being 5 feet 5¼ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34-36½ inches, dark complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was appointed a Private with the service number 964 in the 11th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Brigade A Company. Douglas embarked from Fremantle on the 25.10.1914 on HMAT Medic A7. His next of kin was his aunt, Mrs Shepherd of 80 Hampton Rd Beaconsfield. He attended training school in England and in France, was appointed Lance Corporal on the 10. 3.17 and Corporal on the 31.7.18. He returned to Australia per D30 Port Lyttleton on 23.10.18 and was discharged on the 17.8.19. Douglas was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field, which was promulgated on the 12.2.1919. He married Peggy Reeves on the 16.11.1922 at Scots Church, Fremantle, Well-known and respected in his business and private life and a devoted husband, he ran a butchering business in Canning Highway, East Fremantle after the war. In 1937, he was the driver of a motor van that struck and killed a pedestrian in Palmyra, but there was no evidence of any carelessness on his part. Douglas died on 30.1.1940, aged 43 in East Fremantle. The Rev James Adamson of Scots Church officiated at his burial in Karrakatta Cemetery in Presbyterian section EA, Grave 02541A.
