Charles Francis PENNEFATHER was born on 6th April, 1873 in Launceston, Tasmania to Edward Going PENNEFATHER and Frances HARRISON who had married on 13th July, 1861

He enlisted on 31st January 1902 in Hobart with the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse, C Squadron and embarked for the Boer War on 8th April, 1902.  He also joined the South African Constabulary & served for some years before retiring  & returning to Tasmania in 1914 

Not long after returning from South Africa he re-enlisted in Pontville, Tasmania on 21st August, 1914  to join the 3rd Light Horse

He had been in the 3rd Commonwealth Horse in South Africa and also the South African Mounted Rifles for 13 years and was discharged due to illness.

Charles was promoted to temporary Sergeant on 5th August, 1915 and later discharged on 30th January, 1917 due again to illness  (his rank was then a Corporal)

He returned to Melbourne from Egypt on the ship Ascanius on 2nd September, 1916 and disembarked in Melbourne on 29th September, 1916 and then proceeded to Hobart in Tasmania

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal

Charles married Vera Madge TAYLOR on 2nd February, 1926 at St Stephens Church, Penguin, Tasmania

He died from illness on 19th July, 1932 at the Repatriation General Hospital in Hobart and is buried in Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Tasmania

OBITUARY

Mr. Charles Francis Pennefather died at the Repatriation Hospital in Hobart early yesterday morning.  The deceased was well known in Tasmania especially in the North.  He was born in St Leonards and in his early life was engaged in pastoral pursuits.

He served in the South African War and at the cessation of hostilities joined the Mounted Constabulary after serving for some years in this connection.

He retired from the Force and returned to Tasmania, within a week of his return he enlisted for active service in the Great War, joining the 3rd Light Horse Regiment and proceeding with them to Egypt.

It was while there that his health broke down and he was invalided home to Australia and had been in indifferent health ever since.

Some years ago he left to reside in Brisbane, Queensland to obtain the benefit of a warmer climate and returned to Tasmania only a few months ago.

While residing in Launceston he was an active member of the Returned Sailors & Soldiers Imperial League of Australia and was well & favourably known by members of the organisation.
