William John Petersen was born on 9 May 1881 at Taroom, Queensland, a son to Christian Petersen and Carolina Amelia Petersen (nee Andersen). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Petersen, Westwood, Qld. When he enlisted again in 1915 for WW1 he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Petersen, Rockhampton.

Served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1 (Private S.N. 458, 26th Infantry Battalion AIF) under the name William John Petersen.
When he died in Brisbane in May 1954 the Public Curator published a notice to creditors in the Brisbane Telegraph, 4 Jun 1954, for William John Pedersen also known as William John Petersen. In the funeral notice published in The Courier Mail, 19 May 1954, for William John Pederson it is noted African War Veterans Association members were advised to attend the funeral of their late member.
BDM Qld online registers record his birth under William John Petersen and his death under William John Pedersen. He married Cecilia (alt Cecelia) Baguley on 1 Mar 1917 in Queensland and they had 3 children. His funeral notice noted he was formerly of Warwick and last residing at Nundah.
