Daniel Pope served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private rising to Corporal S.N. 99, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private rising to Sergeant S.N. 657, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).
When he joined the 1st QMI in 1899/1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, it was noted he was single and from Ipswich. Further newspaper articles indicate he was serving as a Constable in the Queensland Police Force when he enlisted. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI and was discharged in Brisbane on 23 Jan 1901.
Not long after he was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB but he is recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 93, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mr. J. A. Born, Solicitor, Nicholas St, Ipswich.
The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 657, Sergeant Daniell Pope, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 93, notes he returned to Brisbane aboard the Norfolk and was discharged 14 Aug 1902.
When he passed in 1947 an obituary published in The Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs Gazette, 16 May 1947, which noted he was born in Worcestershire, England, and was 76 years of age.
Daniel Pope was born about 1870 at Worcestershire, England, a son to Edward William Pope and Maria Caroline Pope (nee Champion). He married Maria "Mary" Scott on 13 Aug 1901 in Queensland, days before returning to South Africa with the 6th QIB. He served as a officer with the Queensland Police Service at various locations including Ipswich, Warwick, Oakey and Toowoomba where he retired with the rank of Sergeant.
