William Hardy Ross was born on 24 Oct 1879 in Queensland, a son to William Monsoon Ross and Honorah Mary Teresa Ross (nee Horrigan).

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and in WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 107, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 28, 9th Australian Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. During WW1 he served at Gallipoli and in France where he was wounded.
