Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Charles Rush served in both the South African (Boer) War (on 2 occasions) and WW1

First service was as a Private S.N. 208 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer war. Second service was as a Private S.N. 609 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen and also as a Trooper in Doyle's Australian Scouts, Boer war. He was mentioned in dispatches by Lord Kitchener for his service in Doyle's Scouts. Third service was as a Private rising to lance Corporal S.N. 561 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, AIF, WW1. He was serving at the Gallipoli Peninsular when he was wounded in action in 1915.

When he first enlisted in 1900 with the 3rd QMI and his details were entered on the original nominal roll, held by National Archives, it was recorded that he was single and from Mitchell, Qld. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 3rd QMI, Bk 3 p. 87, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his brother Frederick Hayward Rush, Mitchell, Qld. He returned to Australia and was discharged in Brisbane on 20 Jun 1901.

Not long after his return, men who had prior service with a contingent in South Africa were being recruited for the 1st Draft of the 6th QIB. The men of the 1st Draft were being sent to reinforce the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already serving in South Africa. The 1st Draft embarked from Sydney on 20 Aug 1901, some 4 months after the original 6th QIB.

The men of the draft were not included in the original nominal roll of the 6th QIB but were recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB to which Charles was allotted. He also spent time serving with Doyle's Australian Scouts for which he was Mentioned in Dispatches by Lord Kitchener in the London Gazette, 29 Jul 1902.

He remained in South Africa for further service when the 5th QIB returned to Australia, the date of his return and discharge are not given.

He enlisted again for WW1 on 28 Aug 1914 and on his Attestation Paper it was noted that; he was born at Leyburn, Qld, and was 37 years 11 months of age, he was single and a labourer; his N.O.K. was his brother Thomas George Rush, Marbango, Mitchell, Qld; and he had previously served in South Africa with the 3rd QMI and Doyle's Australian Scouts.

He was serving at the Gallipoli Peninsular when he suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand on 30 Sep 1915. He recovered and returned to duty but not long after was taken seriously ill with sclerosis and returned to Australia where he was discharged on 26 Jun 1916.

Charles Rush (registered as Charlie Rush) was born on 28 Sep 1873 at Leyburn, Qld, a son to Frederick Rush and Margaret Rush (nee Armstrong).
