John Telfer Skelton served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 217 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Private S.N. 945 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p.  483 & 525; National Archives Australia Boer War Dossier 2nd service).
